Gedit is working again. The problem turns out to be a gedit-R plugin for running progams using the statistical programming language R. I don't recall installing the R-plugin in 12.04 but I have installed it on 10.04 which uses the same home partition as 10.04. I uninstalled gedit, which uninstalled the r-plucing and gedit-desktop (I think). Gedit started up after re- installing the r-plugin but crashed when the plugin was switched on.
Should have thought of this before.
