Because there are many users (several thousand), we don't use user list at the login screen. In 12.04, when in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf one adds: greeter-hide-users=true user list is hidden, but the login screen is very un-intuitive. Instead of displaying "Username" when user needs to input username it displays "Other...", and when when user needs to enter password, it displays entered username, instead of displaying "Password". This is all very confusing - the user doesn't know what to enter (we have about 200 freshman students every year, and usually none of them saw any Linux). First screenshot is when user needs to enter username, and second one is when it needs to enter password (at the previous screen was entered "pera").
