On my installation of 11.10 it happened twice:
After update screen became black and persist black after reboot (on unity
start), login screen worked ok, but i created new user named "test"- on this
login everything was ok. i deleted my normal account and then start to copying
config folders one by one, but everything was ok after copying of whole
configuration.
One month later after next update (nothing graphic related - firefox,
thunderbird etc), screen became black too. So i`ve checked my "test" account -
on which was black too. So i created user test2 on which everything was ok.
So i moved my normal account to another folder, deleted user and created new
with same name, and after moving of whole home folder to previous location
everything stayed ok.
Conclusion: i have to recreate user after update.
