Hi! Thanks for reporting this issue. You'll be pleased to hear that the
scroll position is now restored correctly in the latest development
releases of Ubuntu Software Center. It should probably be noted that
this is only implemented in the available pane at this stage - for 12.04
we won't be implementing this in the installed pane as that code is a
lot more fragile. There is also one bug which has arisen since
implementation - that will be addressed before release. Thanks again for
your interest in making software-center better!

(As a side comment, for future bugs you encounter in software-center it
would be a great help if you could file them against software-center
directly rather than ayatana-design.)

  Fix Released

Bug description:
  software center goes back to the top of the catagory if you exit from
  a more information selection. this is not good for searching for apps
  if we have to then scroll back down every time we want to look to see
  if the suits our perpose
