This bug is a slightly confused combination of two bugs.

First, Compiz resizes a window to less than its minimum width if you
semi-maximize it on the left, but not if you semi-maximize it on the
right. This is bug 723855.

Second, USC hides its search field even when at its proper minimum
width. This is bug 876553.

Title:
Search bar disappears when you "stick" the window to the side of the
  screen

Bug description:
  To reproduce:
  1. Using a lower resolution monitor, take your window, drag it to one side of
the screen, or the other, so that it "sticks"/"pins" to the side of your screen.

You will now notice that the search bar is missing, it is my thoughts
that this is happening because when you pin the window to the side of
the screen it makes it smaller than it is supposed to go.

  center/+bug/927243/+attachment/2717132/+files/software%20center%20bug.png

This is because Compiz is forcing the window to be smaller than the
  minimum software center window size.

The best fix might be to make it so the search bar can expand and
  shrink with the window, perhaps.

  Release: 11.10 + 12.04

    Installed: 5.0.4
