Great idea ... as Steven said, this is way easier said than done and it
behooves us to enlist professionals. What are our goals and intended
audience ... surely not to convince the open source community. And how
are we going to spread the message ... is this some kind of viral
marketing campaign? Is this to be a kind of "Intel inside" message
that we'll ask IBM, Dell, and others will place on their web sites and
in print ads? If the latter is the case, for example, I expect that
they won't take kindly to a slogan that implicitly knocks the products
of a major partner.
That about exhausts my "expertise". I would only add a caution that
OEMs catering to the mass market are probably driven more by cost than
community ideals, and may not want to promote a "Linux alternative"
message. For example, the $199 Everex PC at WalMart lists its OS as
"gOS" not "Linux" and offers "step up" to Vista Basic.
Thanks,
Steve

LinuxWorkgroupConference Call - Minutes1/16
I have spoken with 2 agencies off the record and a
couple of marketing specialists I know. I think we could put together a
call for pro bono proposals as there are many people that believe
deeply in what Linux stands for.
I suggest that we put out a formal document that specs out in general
terms what we are looking for. This document should include information
on campaign goals and intended audience. We could then put together a
review committee to short list proposals for review by the entire
group. I am sure there would be many responses and we would end up with
a very compelling message.
Thoughts?

IMHO, I don't think Tux should be part of the PR. Tux carries all the
connotations of a geek-driven OS. We have a lot of good ideas without
Tux.
I personally like one of the positive slogans that bring out choice.
Either one of the "Free yourself" slogans or one of the "You've Got
Options" slogans would be great.
