Martin,

That's the whole point of the Portland project;
to create environment neutral interfaces that 3rd party
software can use to integrate with a Linux Desktop.

But that's the future; if I want to write software
that *works right now*, I have to make Gnome and KDE
specific hacks.

Unless you're saying that you have a single interface
that will bring up the users preferred email program
with subject, destination, body, and attachments all
prefilled...
