i'm not so sure about this JIRA anymore.
If we store byte[] instead of String for values that are not binary, that mean
we will have to modify all the comparator and syntax checkers to deal with
byte[], plus the PrepareString algorithm. Not sure that for most of the values
(mainly String values) that won't be a major slowdown...
