I'm afraid I don't have time to find the exact code but we have some customizations to xmlbeans error handling so that we can handle substitution groups on the fly. This lets us treat the persistence.xml namespace as a substitution for the gbean element even though it isn't really. I'm pretty sure the code is somewhere near or in our xmlUtils class

hope this is a useful hint...

I am trying to programmatically edit a geronimo-web.xml file and any time I
try to access the web-app portion I get the following exception:

The code that generated this exception is below:
XmlObject plan = XmlObject.Factory.parse(new File(webappDoc));
GerWebAppDocument doc = (GerWebAppDocument)
plan.changeType(GerWebAppDocument.type);
GerWebAppType gerWebApp = doc.getWebApp(); // <-- exception is generated
here

I have tried to use the SchemaConversionUtils.fixGeronimoSchema but did not
seem to help.

Any help would be appreciated.
