AFAIK NetBeans does not ship libraries, but a whole product. We might have some 
valuable libraries, like openide-lookup, but we never tried to provide long 
term support for them.

So, if the whole Platform is expected to run on Java 8 I see no issue with any 
individual module being upgraded.

Anyhow, if your patch maintains Java 6 level, even better!
