[~encodedgeek] I think that PR needs to be cleaned up a bit, there are merge
conflicts here -

and I think your branch needs to be rebased with the upstream master so that
the code changes become more legible.
Also, would it be possible for you to briefly describe what changes you are
planning to include in your PR so that I can see what work I might be able to
pick up?
