Thank you Naoki, I wish I had waited for your reply! I tried to modify /system/b2g/default/prefs/user.js in the device and set both app.update.channel and app.update.url, and the update worked. The problem is that after the reboot to the new image, there were 2 more updates (another system update and a marketplace update). While downloading those, I checked the device settings again, and somehow the channel name had switched to beta again. I assume the modified user.js file was rewritten from the new image, but I expected the nightly image would have contained the right channel somehow.
Anyway, after the new update, the phone boots to a black screen, and I see lots of errors like this in logcat: Cannot open Settings DB. Trying to open an old version? How can I revert to working build now, in either channel? What do I need to clean in the profile to get b2g to start again? Can I just remove all of /data/b2g/mozilla? Do I have to build and flash manually?
