So, given that this is something people (or at least the one who
responded) think ought to work -- is this something we ought to be
testing regularly?  If we're planning to upgrade users from 1.0.1 to
1.2, 1.1 to 1.2, or 1.0.1 to 1.1 to 1.2, should we be testing those
upgrade paths to make sure they work properly?  (Or are we testing
them, and my problem was an edge case resulting from having started
a little bit before the 1.0.1 release?)

I'd note that testing upgrade paths requires more than cursory
testing; it requires testing the functionality of applications (for
example, that an email account or calendar account configured in
1.0.1 still works correctly in 1.2).
