I'm trying to come up with a plan on how we should create a text
selection/caret navigation UI for Firefox OS. On desktop platforms, we
mimic the text selection/caret appearance and behavior of the underlying OS
to a good extent (except on Mac OS X where we don't implement the
direction-less selection and the native highlighting behavior dictated by
the OS.) This has served us well throughout the years.

Just to add to your list of prior art, we're also working on the same challenge
for Firefox for Metro, where touch-friendly editing, selection monocles and so
on are largely working in current builds. You can run most of fxmetro with the
-metrodesktop flag, but to see and test the touch UI you'll need a proper
Windows 8 device with a touch screen. You're in Toronto? Marina and Marco are
both there and I'm sure would be happy to show you around if not lend you a
device.
Yes, I am in Toronto!
Do you know where this functionality is implemented? I think we should
try to unify the implementations as part of this effort so that most of
this code ends up being shared between all of our platforms.
Cheers,
Ehsan
