Thanks Antonio, I guess your explanation is what I'm encountering. I was able to build gecko/gaia v1.1.0hd only with gonk-misc/ril-proxy v1-train branch (same for v1.0). There's probably a lot of variations within branches in such a short period of time. Why was the camera working on my phone with v1.0 and not with the newer ones, only the gods know.
