Landing patches that break usage of builds is even more painful though.
AFAIK, we want people to be able to test Nightly/master on their
devices. Considering that, things not being able to make phone calls
ought to always close the tree, no matter where we are in schedule, IMHO.
I personally think that people should test basic stuff like that
*before* landing patches on the main repository.
Also, we operate the same way on Firefox desktop, and it has helped
greatly to improve quality of the product - that said, there we also
have a real lot of tests that automatically can find almost any breakage
of basic functionality and we in most cases require those tests to be
run on try before landing any patch that could break things - and we are
fast with backouts of patches that actually do break things. Not sure
how far we are with similar coverage on FxOS.
