At XDA Conf last month, MTK had a spokesperson talking about all the improvements they're trying to make to be more open source friendly/compliant. They're still early in that process but committed to a more open future and working with the XDA and other communities to grow open source participation in MTK chipset devices. I think they understand that they have a bad reputation in this area and have realized they need to change.
