Well, what I have done is just flash the boot.img using the instructions from https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Firefox_OS/Developer_phone_guide/ZTE_OPEN_C to get root access, installed the ClockWorkMod recovery from http://www.modaco.com/topic/373213-recovery-clockworkmod-6050-for-zte-open-c-kis-3/ and then applied these updates (although I had to remove the check for the specific build id from the updater script) - everything seems to work fine so far on my UK ebay Open C...
