I've had that same issue on a KK base upgrade, although I added the new fonts gaia was using the old ones. For me the solution was to build gecko/gaia on JB base and only then the new fonts were used by the system. There were also other problems (random freezes of lock screen, inability to use the phone (for talk) with headphones) that were fixed when downgrading from KK to JB.
