For completeness, and as I was using the Flame target anyhow, I tried
booting from the Flame [v18D][1] binary:
$ fastboot boot myboot.img
There was no error message, but it didn't boot. Seems like I was too optimistic.
I also checked if I can boot the Flame with the same command, and yes
it works. After a delay of a few seconds, the Firefox OS logo appears.
