A couple decades of muscle memory using tar -c | tar -x. I would have used cp -Rl, but that breaks with noschg files.
Besides, shouldn’t this use -p if using tar?
That's the default if we're running as root. And if we're not running as root then we get permissions/flags/etc from the METALOG, I believe?
And -f- is the same as nothing.
