I understand it now. My default kernel includes nodevice agp because it's 
not needed for my servers in my basement. I use the same kernel on the 
laptops which assumes that X will load drm which in turn loads agp. The 
i195kms module includes MODULE_DEPEND(i915kms, agp, 1, 1, 1). It doesn't 
see the external reference in the loaded agp.ko module.
