Absolutely! I don't anticipate any issues, the algorithm is free to
use, inter-operate with and improve.

I'd also recommend checking out the Mozilla trademark policy, which
might affect project naming, internal branding etc:

If you're able to share publicly, it would be great to hear more about
your potential use-case and the improvements you want to make - it might
even be something that we should consider adding to the base protocol,
or at least collaborating on.
If you're open to releasing your implementation under an open-source
license, I know a few folks who are currently running their own sync
server and would be interested in a python version of the auth server to
go along with it:
