I think that Mulet is the official way to do it these days.

What OS is your desktop? I recently learned that for Linux, at least, I
needed to use -no-remote along with -profile, or Mulet would try to run as
a new window in my existing Firefox process.  If you're on Linux, you might
try -no-remote or try quitting Firefox completely.  But that's just a guess.
