I think it's smaller because a1 has a lot of features compiled in, because it's a nightly. Possibly symbols too. And because a2 has less features (eg: classes), it broke a lib that uses them :) Now it's being fixed so you should try with a newer gaia. (see https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1222415)
