I used Android for about a year and a half, iOS for 3 years or so, and am
coming up on 2 years for Firefox OS. After this time, I have mixed feelings
about Android's back button. There are some situations where it does
exactly what I want, some situations where it does not do what I want, and
some situations where I have no idea what it *should* do. Overall I find
the feature a bit messy from both a technical and UX perspective. But it is
definitely useful too. I think it's worth investigating more (for instance,
check out Shing Lyu's back button add-on [1]), but I don't think it's clear
yet that this is the path we should be following.

Also, I like edge gestures a lot. I like them in mobile Safari's
implementation (browser back button), and I even like the way mobile Chrome
used to do it with browser tabs (although they killed this freature when
browser tabs got promoted to app windows in the task manager). In general,
I think part of the reason people like desktop web browsing so much is easy
tab management (opening new ones, closing old, quick reopen with
ctr-shift-T, easily switching between tabs, re-ordering, etc). I want to
strive to achieve this tab management on mobile. We are not there yet as
mentioned in this thread: closing tabs is a pain, edge gestures are choppy,
and the order of tabs is sometimes unpredictable. But I think we are on the
right path, and this thread is really helping us understand the pain points.

FWIW, feedback from this thread is being discussed by the systems front end
team, and some developers (like :mcav) having already expressed interest in
exploring improvements. So thanks for all your comments, and keep them
coming. (Also, thanks to Sam for starting it).
