That article isn't correct.   We shifted gears earlier and never planned to
ship 2.6 on phones.  This announcement was made by Ari earlier than 2/4 and
is in the first line of his blog post : "We previously announced that we
would stop offering smartphones through operator channels."   2.6 is the
last version we are making and that is part of the sunsetting of the
project.

We are sunsetting the project so that it matches the gecko from the web
browser more rather than relying on Firefox OS's own specific APIs.  So
it's going to be more web based.

The sunsetting of the project allows Mozilla to concentrate on other IoT
projects, and allow community to drive the Firefox OS project more so.
There are a couple of other projects that rely on Firefox OS, such as TV
and chirimen.  So it will be interesting to see what comes about after the
sunsetting of the project.

You cannot upgrade to this version, you will have to have a complete flash
as the data storage methods will be different.
