Good that you asked :)
We are working on this concept and making good progress. One part of this
tool - was already released with this 4.1.5 version:
you may notice, that inside the PATCH packages of this release (for updating
from version 4.1.4 to 4.1.5) there is one change in the Update procedure:
- now the database update to the latest version can be done using updateApp
script, instead of running update.php and update.sql files manualy.
updateApp executes update.php and update.sql files in particular order, and
displays the status messages about process. So this script can execute all
database update files in particular order since version X to version Y.
Also working on the script, which collects needed files for update (between
versions X to Y) into one package. This would include all files, changed
between these two versions, and template difference documentation with
marked changes.
Some stuff is still need to be polished, some - under discussions about how
to include this into release procedures the best way.
So we are working on that... ;)

thats kind of exactly the same i was thinking as i read the subject in
my inbox... with that release rhythm a nice autoupdater, like the
wordpress one, would smooth. dont get me wrong, its really good to see
that you are working on oxid ce that much.

same for me, i didnt updated 4.1.4 so far cause i wanted to wait for
some opinions and experiences written in the forums. and somehow 4.1.4
wasnt that super urgent, so i thought i could give a few weeks to wait...

auto-magically?
It's a real pain to manually install new versions every one to four weeks
... especially for partners hosting lots of OXID shops. The consequence
for lots of OXID users/partners probably is that some shops just won't be
updated regularly since it's just too much work involved (work which
usually is hard to justify against customers).
