We use a customized Server
with an Motherboard with dual CPU features. At the moment only one CPU is mounted. Intel CPU's have more performance, but as cost as more than AMD CPU's. At least use a RAID I array with SATA disks. On RAID I you have secure and a some performance(Read) features. To Improve performance you can add a SSD RAID I array, also with secure and performance features. One other option is to use SAS Hard-disks to improve performance. To split HTTP Server and MySQL Database also improve performance. Another performance boost is to store the Oxid Pictures on another HTTP Server. Modern Browsers used max 8 connections to one server to load sources, with that you can increase these connections. If you are planing several shops with sevaral IP's and SSL certificates you need a Provider that offers your IP-Address afford. Most Provider offers max 3 IP-Addresses per server. We use a Provider with a Cisco Gbit Switch to manage a lot of IP-Addresses. Remote Management is a good feature to access your server on e.g. configurations faults (Network). With these feature you have the possibility to access your server faster than the Service-Worker of your Provider and you save money.
