Ok - so there is a convenient and secure possibility included for counters, but used only for orders? And, of course the next step would be to offer a more usable way to manipulate those counters. It is very common to define a specific prefix or suffix for such order- or invoice-counters, as well as a custom start point. Maybe within admin interface?
