I have currently no idea about the root cause.

Questions:
* Does it works on karmic with exactly the same kiwix-serve source code?
* Does it also failed without an index?
* What is exactly the http request: http://localhost/ ?
* Do you have the same issue with the kiwix xulrunner app?
* Which version of libmicrohttpd do you use?

I'm currently on the road and do not have a Lucid system to test, but I will 
try to reproduce this behaviour as
soon as I will be back at home.

As this bug seems to be a kiwix specific bug I propose to continue the 
discussion on the bug tracker.
