Can't create any user - system claims "The username already exists"

Just installed the 4.2 beta 1 with WebDAV support, now trying to create a
public user from the
http://localhost:8080/magnoliaPublic/demo-features/modules/public-user-registration/PURRegistration.html
No matter what I try, it always complains that "Username:: The username already
exists".
The logs do not say anything, and I confirmed that no user exists that possibly
matches the usernames or emails I tried (not sure if the system checks if
emails already exist)
