thanx to Greg the parts I wasn't 100% sure how to answer are gone so let's 
focus on the application integration part:

there's no plans to support JSR 168 portlets (although there had been for 
magnolia 3.x) - actually many people stopped using portlets as they are heavy 
weight and rather complex to develop. When it comes to integrating apps there's 
a growing number of people relying on OpenSocial 
([url]http://www.opensocial.org/[/url]) as it is becoming more and more popular 
(among others used by Google, Xing, LinkedIn, Jira or Blogger).

By the end of last year we started to develop a module that provides a 
OpenSocial container within Magnolia so that you can host OpenSocial Gadgets. 
It's not yet released but surely worth having a look on it:
