Upgrading 3.6.8 sites to 4.5 or later
-------------------------------------

                 Key: MAGNOLIA-3919
                 URL: http://jira.magnolia-cms.com/browse/MAGNOLIA-3919
             Project: Magnolia
          Issue Type: Task
      Security Level: Public
          Components: core
    Affects Versions: 4.4.5
            Reporter: Bill Pulford
            Assignee: Philipp Bärfuss
            Priority: Critical

We have two stable major sites that have > 600 pages that currently run under
version 3.6.8 of magnolia. (www.diamond.ac.uk is the obvious one). These are
beginning to become deprecated and we are not able to profit from the
significant extra functionality offered by more recent versions or magnolia >
4.5. The sites are maintained with limited resources so we need to look
carefully at the gains with respect to the effort required to perform
upgrades.

We propose to create an evaluation site based on the above in order to be able
to judge the potential improvements and be able to justify further development
resources. We will need some of Magnolia resources to help with this operation.

I would mention that we are concerned about the lack of a sensible direct
upgrade path from 3.6 -> 4.x without very large effort on our part.
