Massive amount of users cause server error

We have automatically created a massive amount of users (~30 - 40k) in Magnolia
out of our Marketing Ressource Management System
But now we are not able to reliable work with these users.
If we want to assign a specific role to one of these users we will visit
Security > Users
in our Magnolia system.
But this sub page is not responding and the requests fails after 5 minutes and
a server error ist shown ("Internal Server Error 500 or page cannot be
displayed").
Our question is now:
How many users can be reliably handled by Magnolia?
Did you perhaps already improve this behaviour in a newer Magnolia version
(e.g. by adding pagination)?
Are there any related issues we might get into with a large user base?
