I am not sure it is so complicated. We do hold multiple "versions" of a page and make the decision on which one to serve to the user at runtime. This is to handle the need for different "Editions" of our news service for different parts of the world. So the Australian edition of the central News page is different to the UK edition, for example - although they both sit on the same URL.
The page contains a drop down list of editions, which is used both by the editor to select the edition they want to edit in Magnolia, and the user, should they want to switch to a different edition. We have a special Magnolia template to handle these multiple versions so that there is only one node in the Magnolia node tree that you see in AdminCentral.
