Area definitions which are defined in the prototype are not available in the TemplateDefinition of an stkTemplate. The information about those areas are merged in the STKRenderer, see info/magnolia/module/templatingkit/renderers/STKRenderer.java:90
To be able to use the full definition in pages app we would have to introduce a dependency to STK, because those def. are tighly connected to the STK Site definition.
