Hello It depends a little bit on what you want to do with Magnolia.
Magnolia Academy might be a good starting poinf for you. See http://academy.magnolia-cms.com/ and http://academy.magnolia-cms.com/display/MA/My+role+is . To set up your development environment it is advantageous to know the basics of Maven and Git. See http://documentation.magnolia-cms.com/display/DOCS/Development+environment. Anyway installing and using existing Magnolia modules does not require Java knowledge, and you also can create new modules only by configuration without Java. However to get the complete power of Magnolia - Java is your friend :-) I hope this helps.
