Apart from using colors, these icons also have different shapes. This helps color-blind users, but also increases legibility significantly for regular users. We've been using the new icons in the status bar of the page editor for some time already. We've also started using them to indicate the publication state of components in the page editor. Now, we want to use it in columns everywhere. It seems that this is quite easy to do since the visual representation of the activation state is determined in a single place.
