I had a hard time upgrading to java 8 on my 4 year old mac. I ran a few installers - and in the system preferences it looked like I was running 1.8, but my terminal was still running Java 7. I think I finally had to find and edit some profile file. I know we dont want to reproduce the entire internet in our docs - but a key part of getting new devs onboard is to get them through the installation hurdles. Therefore I think we should either tell them how to do it - or point them to a location with reliable instructions.
