Is it mandatory for snapshot jars to contain the string "SNAPSHOT" in

Yes, it is, you should use 1.7.2pre8-SNAPSHOT or also 1.7.2-SNAPSHOT
till you release and tag files in svn.

That goes too far for me : svn on sourceforge is well, buggy, so if I
put Maven between me and SF's svn, I'll be miserable, it'll be hell.

Yes, sf is pretty slow here too... but as soon as you will try
performing and deploying a release using maven you will never look
back ;)

I was planning to have a 'snapshot' dir
(http://maven.openwfe.org/repo) and to upload 'by request' to ibiblio.

Please use a different repo, (http://maven.openwfe.org/snapshots),
mixing releases with "in development" versions is a pretty bad idea
after all...

It's important to have full releases on ibiblio (imho).
Sure, that's why I was suggesting to sync it... no more upload
requests, releases will be up on ibiblio a lot faster

John, could I ask you to release the current "pre" version with a
different number? Since we would like to release magnolia rc3 I'd like
to be sure that nobody will encounter problems due to the differences
in the various openwfe jars marked with the same version number...
