Interesting web page. I particularly like the advice to include an
explanation with my patch, patching against the latest code of a branch, and
not taking it personally if my patch isn't used.
my €0.02 ... if you use eclipse, then you can right click on a file or a
hierarchy of files and select Team->Create Patch... to create a patch of one
or more files. This patch can then be attached to your bug report in jira
with a description of the reasoning behind the patch.
