I have to admit I took this message from one email client.
I've seen it plenty of times too; I think it implies the "combination
of" the username and password does not match.
Couple of remarks though:
- I'd rather avoid the exclamation mark
- Maybe we can differentiate between a non-existing user and a
wrong password for an existing user. People can then override/
customize the messages if they feel that disclosing the fact that a
certain username is valid (by saying that only the password is wrong)
is a security threat.

This indicates that username and password should be same?
How about:
"Login failed! Your username and/or password are incorrect."
