I don't know what format the file is in, but you could preprocess it with
(say) grep, alphabetize by first letter, and get 26 smaller files
(actually, 36 if you use 0-9, a-z as your first letter seperator).

That might do it :)  These files aren't really meant for editing, they're
for reading through and processing data from.
