John,

Interesting, I'll run some tests on my Japanese machine when I get back to
the office Friday. We'll keep you posted on our findings.

Cheers,

James

Subject: Multilingual Domain Lookup Anamolies

I have noticed something strange with multilingual domain Lookups. If you
can register mld's, try this one...

First, make sure you have clicked on one of your links to set the encoding
type to one of the mld types, say Japanese for example.

Type in regular ASCII characters, and the reg_system.cgi is smart enough to
know that you have not actually used any native language characters, and
does a lookup for the normalized name. The encoding type will revert back to
iso-8899-1, as it should.

If you do a lookup on a5.com, for example, while your encoding type is
specified as shift-jis, you will be informed that the domain is unavailable,
and your lookup will revert to iso-8899-1 encoding.

But, if you do a lookup on a50.com while your encoding type is specified as
shift-jis, you will be informed that the domain is available. It is not,
however, available. a50.com was reserved a while back, but in this case
reg_system.cgi has accepted a50.com as a valid multilingual domain name and
has RACE-encoded the domain name as bq--abqtkma.com and found that it is
available...

This seems to be a function of RACE.pm, where the actual RACE conversion
stuff takes place. I tested RACE.cgi, the RACE Convertsion tester provided
with the latest code, and it works the same way. If I try to encode a.com,
it won't convert. If I try a1.com, no luck. a11.com - no. a10.com - bingo,
we get bq--abqtcma.com . a0.com does convert to bq--abqta.com . 0.com
becomes bq--aaya.com. ascii0.com and I get bq--abqxgy3jneya.com ... Seems to
be the presence of a 0 ...

Bug or feature?
