Sorry, I wrote a totally wrong explanation. My brain must have been temporarily clogged over or something. There was incompatibity wrt word boundaries in the beginning and so I just assumed that was still the case. The actual, true reason is that luatex does not listen to \hyphenchar=-1 as a means to prevent hyphenation. I am now reconsidering whether this is a bug or not.
