As far as I know we cannot. We played around with this when we had the issue when generating thumbnails in the video app on certain devices that only allow one hardware decoder to be instantiated. The thumbnail generated used the hardware decoder instance resulting in the actual playback being in software. Back then we concluded that we'd have manually re-create the element or clone it.
