Advice on tracking currentTime

For the work we're doing on WebVTT, we have to manage lists of cues 
according to the media element's current time.  For demo purposes, we 
hacked something together that happens when timeupdate events are 
fired.  I want to know what the right way is to do this, though. How 
should we be connecting things?
