Currently, both Chrome and Firefox use VP8 as the only video codec for
WebRTC.
There are some thorny IPR issues involved here -- even more than for
video playback -- which can cause problems for free software, for both
senses of the word "free". The licensing fees cause problems for gratis
software, while the restrictions inherent in licensed IPR cause problems
for libre software.
As far as I know, the most recent public statement on the topic is a
blog post from Mozilla's CTO, Brendan Eich: " We are taking the fight
for unencumbered formats to the next battlefront, WebRTC, also as
promised. More on that front later." (see
