I'm not sure which patents you're referring to. MPEG-1? some of MPEG-2?

The last of the mp3 patents expire over the next few years, but for
HTML5 video 'MPEG' means h.264 and AAC in the iso mp4 container. I
believe both of those codecs are covered until at least the mid 2020's.
